Freemasons Rookie Lifeguard Challenge A Success!
Our top four Rookie Lifeguards; Taris Harker, Zoe Merrick, Ijzaak Van der Mespel, and Max Marshall competed in the Rookie Teams Challenge Competition on Saturday (March 20th) at Waimairi Beach. The team performed consistently well across all disciplines (run swim run, tube rescue, theory, CPR, first aid scenario and lifegaurd scenario) and came away with the gold medal. Congratulations to Taris, Zoe, Isjaak and Max!!
Intensive training for the competition began six days prior and with the team being a lot more 'animated and energetic' than the teams of previous years, I wondered how much they were actually learning. All the same, they somehow managed to take all the information in. The team performed consistently well across all disciplines (run swim run, tube rescue, theory, CPR, first aid scenario and lifegaurd scenario) and came away with the gold medal.
The highlights of the competition were winning the CPR event, with Ijzaak performing particularly well here; winning the theory test section, with Max Marshall obtaining the highest score overall - this is particularly great since Max had an aversion to studying the lifeguard book in the beginning; watching Taris command the patrol scenario very successfully, with Zoe also performing well here by remembering the small but vitally important point scoring details. I was very proud to see the team pull everything together on the day and compete at a very high standard. Congratulations team!!

The happy team after the presentation.
