Becoming a lifeguard

Become a surf lifeguard

Taylors Mistake SLSC welcomes expressions of interest from anyone who would like to know more about lifeguarding. We provide full training for members wanting to become a surf lifeguard and an ongoing development program for qualified lifeguards.

To become a lifeguard requires a number of skills and qualities but most importantly a positive, ‘can do' attitude. To lifeguard, members must first obtain their Surf Lifeguard Award. To achieve this, members must be over 14 and be able to successfully complete:

  • 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes
  • 200m run, 200m surf swim, 200m run
  • Practical CPR assessment
  • Theory test covering general beach knowledge, first aid, emergency response and lifeguarding skills

Our coaching team will help in developing and supporting new members to achieving the Award.

If you are 14 or under, you can take part in our Junior Surf program designed to help our future lifeguards learn surf skills, beach safety (and have a whole lot of fun!). The Junior Surf program is open to 7 to 13 year olds.
