Junior Surf Training Sessions

Sunday morning Junior Surf Programme

Sunday morning sessions at the beach start promptly at 10am with a briefing about general beach conditions and notices regarding upcoming carnivals and events. Please ensure your child is changed into their wetsuit and wearing their vest and beanie ready for the start of the session.

After warming up, children will be divided into age groups and participate in a variety of land and water based activities depending on the plan for the session and the conditions on the day. All children learn about the beach, waves and water safety and gain confidence in the surf at a level appropriate to their age and ability.  Older children will learn more advanced skills for surf swimming, board paddling and beach running events. The programme runs until approximately 11.30am but may go on longer on warm days.

We always finish up with a sausage sizzle – a chance to refuel and catch up with other families. Sausages are $2 coin donation with all proceeds throughout the season going towards supporting the ‘Oceans’ Athletes attending Nationals. There are showers and changing rooms at the club and parents are welcome to use the kitchen to make themselves a cuppa. Please ensure that mugs are washed and dried after use and the kitchen area is left clean and tidy for the next person.

This year, the Junior Surf programme will commence on the 28 October 2018 and will continue through to the 17 March 2019.  There will be no Junior Surf on Labour Weekend, Canterbury Anniversary Show Weekend, 30 December 2018 and 6 January 2019. There is also no Junior Surf training at Taylors Mistake on Carnival days. See Calendar for more details

Please note that we rarely cancel any training session but in the event of extreme weather, we will advise of cancellations on our Taylors Mistake Junior Surf Life Saving Facebook group

Additional training sessions for U11s – U14s

On Monday and Thursday evenings from 6-7pm, additional training for the U11- U14 age groups is provided. The focus on these sessions is to develop board technique as well as swimming endurance. Whilst these weekday sessions are aimed at children who are preparing for carnivals and the ‘Oceans’ competition, anyone in this age group who wishes to improve their skills, and has their 200m badge, is welcome to come along.

This season we are also going to be running an additional beach skills session where children in the U11 to U14 age group will have an opportunity to practice beach flags / sprints / relays. This beach session will be on a Sunday morning at 9am, immediately prior to the usual Junior Surf session at 10am.

Please note that these additional training sessions are not appropriate for U8-U10s unless directed by your coach.  For more information about these sessions, please see the information on weekly training on our calendar page.
